Apparently, there is this myth about moths being dead spirits. Well vengeful bad spirits, but since I think moths are lovely and beautiful, let’s just say spirits of any kind. I love that idea, moths are mainly found during night time, looking for light, I can imagine them being ghosts of people that passed recently. After all there are even moths with the image of a skull on the back.

Sure, those mainly remind me of Silence of the Lambs, but then again that movie is amazing. I can’t even say if I like the movie or TV show adaptation of Hannibal better. Of course, the TV show has Hugh Dancy and he is literally my favourite male eye candy. And it’s by Bryan Fueller, because he is an amazing show runner (thinking of, I have to continue American Gods). Anyway, I think moths work great with the genre in general, because they have this darkness and calmness at the same time.

Of course, moths also remind me of Animal Crossing, because as a kid I used to play AC in the evening, especially in summer and catching moths was always part of that. By now I also own my own little (or not so little, it’s actually rather big) moth and it looks a lot like the big one in Wild World. So besides me loving moths, and this on being beautiful, that is another plus. You can see it here, by the way.

In a way that also matched the gothic vibes Krakow has to it. However I cannot let this pass without mentioning how AMAZING this chimney cake (it’s actually a Czech thing, but whatever) with caramel cream, a sort of frozen yoghurt/ice cream and my favourite bisquits. Not only does it look like heaven, it was an utter dream come true. That’s probably why I look at it as if it was my one true love or my newborn.

Flowers and Writing

I’m sorry for being a little inactive at the moment, but I do not feel all that inspired. Especially writing wise, it’s probably one of the reasons I did not post this outifit earlier, it’s about a month old, after all. But to be honest my writing motivation just isn’t that high. I don’t really know what to write and feel like it’s a bit like writer’s block while writing a story. Hmmm.

What I can say is that I really love this brooch, because it’s a beautiful bee (which I love) and it’s from a dear friend. It’s a bit heavy though, so while it would actually match dainty dresses and scarfes, it would rip delicate fabrics. But writing this, I think it would look great holding a dark scarf around the shoulders on colder days.
However, I’m really happy I’m travelling next week, maybe that’ll get me inspired. After all, I am feeling a bit bored at home at the moment, so getting out will help for sure.

Handmade Update June 2017

This month was me catching up on all the sewing I missed over the last two months. So, there was some time when I created a lot of stuff out of fabric I got at my grandparents, so here we go.

Wednesday Watercolour Painting
Wednesday Postcard
5th of June
Well, first I decided to paint Wednesday of watercolours and to be honest I really like the red background – that idea worked out well.

Star Wars Skirt
etsy Star Wars Skirt
9th, 10th of June
For my etsy store I made a Star Wars Skirt and there is still some fabric left, so you might want to head over there.

Lace Border Dress
Dress with Lace Border
10th of June
This project is based on a ModCloth dress, I adored for quite some time. It’s actually apricot, but I wanted something a bit witchy and that dark lavender tone is more than perfect. Also I love the lace details and I think it matches the tone very well. It’s pretty long compared to my 50s style wardrobe, so I am pretty excited to wear it for the first time.

Bat Sleeve Dress
Bat Wing 60s Dress
11th of June
Inspired my among other things this I wanted a bat wing dress – I wanted something sixties, somwthing that would actually require a beehive and Twiggy Makeup. There is a little issue with the lining showing on the right side, but I will figure this out.

Carot Crop Top
Carot Crop/Bra Top
11th of June
You know I got a couple of fabrics in Augsburg and now I decided to make some crop tops. This fabric is so adorable and I saw this pattern online, so I created my own based on the photograph on the front.

Governess Dress
Chiffon Edwardian/Victorian inspired Dress
12th of June
Recently I fell in love with Edwardian and Victorian dresses and really like those gothic vibes (gothic as in 19th century horror stories and the aesthetic, not pop culture goth). I think it looks a bit like somthing a governess would wear. It is inspired by this, however longer and without the collar (because I did not enjoy the way the collar looked and think this looks a bit older that way).

Wine Two Piece
Wine Red Two Piece (Cape/Skirt)
13th of June
Another one inspired by etsy is this two pice – I immediately fell in love with the idea of wearing a skirt as a cape when it gets colder. As with the first dress I wanted something darker, so I went for the wine tone. (Also it makes me feel a bit like Jayne Mansfield.)

Kitsch Kitten Crop Top
Kitty Kitsch Crop Top
14th of June
This is probably my favourite crop top I made this month – the print is so kitchy and I think the sweetheart neckline is perfect for the print. It’s also great because I don’t have to wear a bra with it.

Sheep Crop Top
Sheep Crop/Bra Top
14th of June
I’m so glad I decided to made tops now, because with not really shopping for clothing anymore and also not having too many tops this is an easy way to stock my closet. I definitively have to work on my blouse making, so that is another project for the rest of 2017.

20s Day Dress Slip Dress
20s Slip Dress
15th of June
With my current love for the 19th century to the 20s also made me create this dress (it’s based on a white slip dress I saw browsing on etsy, but I lost the link) – I wanted a soft, light (in weight and colour) cotton and this one has the perfect feel to it and I just love a beautiful insect print. I think it’s perfect for a 20s day dress

Sailor Skirt Red Mum
Mum’s Red Sailor Skirt
28th, 29th of June
My mum recently bought fabric for table runners, pillows and placemats and since she really liked it she asked me for a riviera style skirt which could be tied, so I made one. I really like the style and consider making more skirts with ribbons to tie.

Thyra Dresses
I also gave to of my old dresses to my friend Thyra and she looks adorable in them.

So this is what I made this month. What have you made this week?

Imperfection and Beauty

Pink Babydoll 60s Outfit Alice

To be honest – thoose pictures have been waiting on my notebook for almost three months by now, because I wasn’t entirely happy with them. This outfit as a whole does not work 100% – mainly because while my hair was matching the skirt perfectly about a week earlier it had faded too much. However, I did decide on finally posting it. After all it’s okay not to be perfect. This was also my last colourful hair colour, so it deserves some appreciation. As I write this my hair is dark brown with a white streak.

After all in a way perfection is quite boring, usually it’s more interesting to work towards it and the things that happen along the way. I think Alice is quite the appropriate brooch for that – Wonderland is rather fa from the norm and perfection and that’s what makes it so beautiful. All the weirdness and beauty that comes with being different gives the story and world of Alice so much. And it does the same in this world. Usually it’s people who are different who change the world.

Handmade Update March 2017

Leia Star Wars Acrylic
Leia Acrylic
22nd of February, 3rd of March
I did show you the wip in February and now it’s done. Though Leia does not really have a nose. Well, I guess, I have to fix that.

Light Green Dress
Light Green Dress
4th of March
That one should have been a dress with dinosaurs on the hem, because it seemed so perfect. I saw this fabric and knew it was great for the dinosaurs. However as I was done with the dress I considered my idea again and left it as it was. And I love this fabric and cut a lot.

Yellow Babydoll
Babydoll yellow
5th, 6th of March
Based on this reference I wanted to use the great flower fabric I found in Augsburg for a babydoll (well, technically two). So after deciding on a cut I went to look for some matching chiffon in pink and yellow (mum’s recommendation) and added that.

Pink Babydoll
Babydoll pink
5th, 6th of March
For the lining I used some leftover fabric from my Leia dress and it’s so soft in the skin. And it looks very cute, I think. But oh with this flower fabric what could go wrong.

50s Kimono Dress Cherry Blossom
Cherry Blossom Dress
5th, 6th of March
I did use the left-over Leia fabric for the lining here as well. The cherry blossom fabric took my fancy, because I like @nekomatahime‘s aesthetic a lot at the moment and just in general have a bit of an Asian obsession currently. So, I turned it into Fifties/Kimono inspired dress (which actually was a thing) and after applying the piping twice with my sewing machine which ended in a terrible mess I hand-sewed them on and hand-sewing really grows on me, to be honest.

Alice in Wonderland Anne Dress Apron

20th, 25th, 28th of February, 3rd of March
This one was also shared before, last month to be exact, and not it’s finished, another Alie dress and I really hope it fits.

I have been working on this whole thing for quite some time and now the resulting pictures are blurry. Great. Also, def. have to iron the straps of the bow.

Currently I’m working on:

Star Wars

Star Wars

If I wanted to list my obsessions Star Wars would be really high up on the list – and you know that by now, I guess. Not only for story and character reasons, but also because it is set in space. I mean I do not want to study astronomy, but I find it so interesting and I love stars so much. They are pretty and the mere idea of their being more life than just here on earth is so wonderful. I love the open space. I love the stars. I love the planets. All this incredible beauty, I just love it all so much, it’s wonderfully pretty and I like my hair resembling a galaxy (even though as I write this I am already more of a purple – however still a bit galaxy themed). Scifi stories set in space are some of my favourite things to read and I have watched so many movies set in space. And even the weird ones are wonderful in a way (Queen of Outter Space!).

I think the vastness gets me a lot, it is crazy to me to imagine it (and impossible in a way) and with it the though of being in an open space on my own. Especially since I get somewhat claustrophobic recently, I have no idea what triggered it, but I first had this sensation at the museum in a little black room back in December. It was terrible, I felt hot and cold, and I had to get out there so fast. Since then I had this a few times on public transport. Where obviously I can’t leave.

I have no idea what causes that anxious feeling, but I would prefer to be without it. However, Star Wars/the galaxy kind of calms me down, because there is so much space. Sure, that does not help on the metro, but when I was feeling bad some time ago, watching A New Hope gave me new hope, too. That was a good feeling and I find it interesting how the idea of so much space and beauty has a calming impact on me.

Handmade Update – February 2017

February is over and I’d say I have been semi-productive, I made two more things of my 2017 sewing plans list. But other than that I did not make a lot of stuff, I have some plans for March, but I think it will be similar, because I have a lot of things to do and prepare for April.

Leia Dress
Leia Dress
15th of February
For Comic Con in Munich this year I want to be Leia Organa and so I needed to make a dress, the cut is pretty easy and you have almost nothing to sew, so that was fun. I knew which fabric was used for the original, however that fabric is not really available anymore so I went for this beautiful soft fabric. It’s slightly shiny, but not in a cheap way. However, you cannot imagine how many references I had for this dress to see where seams were.

Shift Insect Dress Mami
Insects Dress (Mum)
15th, 16th of February
For my mum I made this insect dress that is inspired by 60s shift dresses and I think the print is incredibly pretty.

Alice Theatrical Dress
Alice Theatrical Dress
Alice Theatrical Dress
8-11th, 13th, 14th, 17th, 18th of February
Instead of the Cheshire Cosplay I made another Alice Cosplay, one that is more theatrical. I really like the different fabrics and I think the little heart is a cute detail. I also decided to add a few charms to represent Wonderland.

Red Crop Top
Red Polka Dot Crop Top
22nd of February
That one was just a test, to be honest, it’s based on this tutorial and I am not sure whether or not I will wear it in summer, because I cut to close to the middle on the top side…

Leia Watercolour
Leia Watercolour
22nd of February
I really, really want to get back into drawing and painting so I tried to paint a watercolour postcard of Leia. It’s not like the best I’ve ever done, but I am okay with it, I just do not like the eyes. But I hope to improve again next month.

Those things I’m currently working on:

Leia Acrylic
Leia Acrylic
22nd of February
Then I tried using acrylic paint again – it is basically the same painting like the one above, but I really love acrylics and I had to take a picture of the painting with just the galaxy (without stars though), because I like the slightly raw look a lot.

Alice Dress (Anne)
20th, 25th, 28th of February
For Anne in London I made another Alice dress, this one however heavily inspired by the Disneyland one. Since it isn’t finished yet, I do not have a photo yet.

What did you create this week and do you have any tips on getting back into painting?

The dress to me has such a japanese, geisha vibe, it’s so beautiful with all the flowers and really matches the flowers in the gardens. It also really reminds of the one Pushing Daisies episode where they visit the Sushi/Poker place. It’s one of my favourite episodes dress-wise. And Miss Fisher sometimes goes for Asian (inspired) dresses, as well and they always look gorgeous. But, to be honest, I think japanese fashion – be it traditional or modern is very intersting. Of course, that’s also because it’s quite different from western fashion with the prints alone. But too, with the cuts, they are very distinct.

I never really got into Lolita, though I think it’s a beautiful fashion style. Of course, as someone who has never been to Japan, I can only rely on the feeling I get from travel diaries and documentaries, but I feel like in the big cities at least, people tend to dress much more diverse than in most cities in Europe/US. You can draw a lot of inspiration from Japanese Brands and Street Fashion photographs and I love seeing the influences on western culture as well, to me that’s one of the pros of the internet that we can see what people in other countries like and get inspired by the way they stye certain things.

About a month ago, when there was a lot of snow here, where I live, my mum and I went out to take some photos, have a cup of tea and enjoy the wintery air. We did not know that there was a butterfly exhibition at our local botanical garden, but since we really enjoy these things and we were strolling atound the garden, we decided to have a look. And we were not disappointed, the butterflies and moths living there are flying around and eating and it’s such a lovely, calm atmosphere even though there obviously are quite a few kids.

colourful hair guide

hair guide blue hair colourful
As someone with colourful hair people on- and especially offline who does my hair, why I have it like that, what I use and of course what colours are upcoming. So I decided to show these things with you today.

hair colour red
split dye orange pink
Back in August I shared my hair story, but to give you a quick overview over the colourful hair dyes (aka not brown/blonde). I was red about three or four different times and I always liked it, nevertheless I always went back to blond/brown after red. By late 2015/early 2016 I started mixing things up myself – before my mum or the hair dresser had done it for me. I tried purple-ish, had the split-dye orange-pink and peach. Since this summer I change my hair colour about once a month, the current being blue with purple roots.

How I go
ConfettiBleaching
I visit the hair dresser about every two months to get my hair cut and roots bleached. I do not dare to bleach my hair on my own – I was really afraid before bleaching them for the first time, but apparently my hair is rather though. However some of it did break aftre bleaching them for the third time – I guess the main issue was that my hair was dyed (directions) before and there was a lot of jazz going on. It is growing back by now and you can barely see it. Obviously that is something you have to consider when bleaching your hair – even professionally and the more often you get your hair bleached the higher the risk. Also, while my hair is easy to maintain, some people do get frizzy hair from bleaching. So keep that in mind – it is only hair after all.
hair colouring
Colouring
Usually I go like this: I have the blonde for a month and then put the colour on my hair. I do have the plan for the next hair colour about one or two months before I do the colouring, so I’m pretty sure I will not regret it. After washing and (blow)drying my hair I start with my fringe section (I wear gloves and do it by hand, I prefer that over a hair colour brush) and then part my hair in the middle and do one side and then the other one. Then I continue to the back of my head and eventually do my tips again, because they tend to get little to now colour. Next I just put the stuff I have left in my little mixing bowl on my head, trying to cover spots I missed and just put another layer on top. Last I put up my hair, it usually sticks together because it’s short and full of hair dye and wrap some tin foil around my head (to get lost in conspiracy theories obvs). Usually I let my hair colour sit in my hair for half an hour or one. I don’t usually touch up my hair within the month, because I’ve always like the way the colours wash out. However you can definetly apply another layer or another colour on top – preferrably something that has a similar colour scheme or is darker. Don’t jump from dark blue to yellow, but go from blue to purple or waist until it washes out completely.

Some upcoming plans and inspiration
hair colour purple
My decision on my next hair colour is based on a few things – Instagram usually gives me a lot of inspiration, not only people but also drawings. But, I’m not limited to online inspiration, it’s also when I see someone on the street or just think of a colour – the split-dye was purely made up by me (even though people did that combination before I did not know of that). The blue however was inspired by someone telling me “oh you should dye your hair blue next”, not only because someone asked me, but that was one of the reasons. Maybe if you want to change your hair every once in a while, just keep a list/screenshots to remind you of them. I really want to try yellow this year and a greyish-pink mix, but I would also love a darker pink – which is with the blue already on my hair probably the easiest to do. Also, I want to go back to blonde again, like the one I had in Prague, but we will see…

What I use
Directions Hair Dye Colour Carnation Pink Lagoon Blue
As I mentioned I do not bleach my hair at home, so I can only recommend hair dyes. I did use elumen by Goldwell the first time I had red hair, however I’m pretty sure they test on animals, so I would not buy their stuff again. Besides that it stayed in my hair forever – there was no way of getting that stuff out other than by dyeing my hair brown. i also tried Manic Panic ones, but I barely got any colour out of that (might have been do to the fact that I had not bleaches my hair, but it was a light colour, so…). Ever since then I only use directions, mainly the blue and pink tones and I was never disappointed. BlueBanana sent me Carnation Pink and Lagoon Blue – Lagoon Blue is my current colour. I actually ordered from BlueBanana before (via amazon), because they sell directions for a really good price, but they also sell cute fandom stuff. So in case you look for directions, I would really recommend their website. You can mix and match directions and it works pretty well, e.g. for the peach I made a mix of Mandarin, Flamingo Pink (and Revlon Nutri Color 004 my hair dresser gave me) and conditioner. You can basically use every kind of conditioner that is white and creamy. If your hair is light blonde the colour you mix wil be the one you end up with, might be a little lighter, because cream usually looks a bit darker than hair.
My favourite Directions are Lagoon Blue and Mandarin, but the pinks are high quality as well.

Taking care
Peach Hair
To be honest I am not a hair care person. Not at all, I use conditioner only to make my hairdye lighter and masks and stuff only about every two months. So, I have to say, I am lucky that I’m blessed with tough hair. However I do one thing: I only wash my hair about once a week, only every 5-7 days that keeps my colour intense and is good for my hair, I think. I do also use heat – to get my bob and when I do curls (I have a weird/good curling routine, I might share that). The colours do fade and I know some people include a bit of their dye into the conditioner they usually go for and I think that’s pretty smart. If you’re a person to use masks, why not do that once a week while reading or doing stuff, just keep it in longer than usual. Directions themselves are not in any way bad for the hair, they are said to be a bit like Conditioner and I think.

How to dare it
Blue Hair
Now to the most interesting part for you, I guess, how to take the plunge. For bleaching, go to a good hair dresser, usually they know what they are doing and your hair will not break. However, you should be okay with getting rid of a few cms/inches due to fraying. Personally, I don’t have a big problem with fraying (again, I am lucky!), but depending on your hair type it might fray. For colours, if you are really unsure about it, try a wig, there are good ones for 20 € – now that I own a few wigs, I could see me wearing the natural ones just for a day. With something to wear on your head – scarfes, flowers, hats you can make most of them look pretty natural. When your job restrictions keep you from changing your hair colour, a wig can be a good solution – whether you wear one at your job or in your private life. If you go for your first colour, maybe start with orange, red or pink tones, they seem to be more accepted by society by now, especially when toned down a bit. Purple, green and blue are much more noticeable, so it’s great if you start out with that, but it is also fun to start with a subdued pink. But, to be honest, it is up to yourself and only you can do this decision, just keep in mind that your hair will grow back/out and you can rather easily wash out Directions or dye over them if you do not like it. Just buy a natural tone with the bright colour you choose and you’re on the save side. Also, consider this – if you don’t like the way your skin looks in a certain colour, it might not be the best colour to dye your hair (that’s why I stray from green).
Blue Hair
People are nicer than you might think, actually, last weekend when I went shopping with my mum about five people came up to me telling me they liked my hair and sharing stories. Recently a man told me I had the hair colour of a witch – I do not know whether or not that was supposed to be an insult. Personally I think witches are great, back in the day witches were just women with a lot of medical knowlegde (regular people were afraid of), so who wouldn’t wanna be that? However, people can be unfriendly and insulting and even though I have near to no experiences like that, I wanted to tell you. It is of course an issue of confidence, but to be honest exciting hair colours/cuts do push your confidence a lot and it does help feeling better about yourself. So if you wanted to dye your hair in whatever colour for quite some time, just do it and rock it!

What is your current or dream haircolour?

BlueBanana did sent me directions in Lagoon Blue and Carnation Pink, their was no sponsorship whatsoever included, all of the opinions stated are mine. However the link to the website an Affiliate Link.

Handmade Update | January 2017

This month was filled with making skirts for other people and etsy, however I also made two things of my 2017 projects. For February I hope to make some Cosplays – some are for working in Wonderland as Alice (and the Cheshire Cat), but actually I also really want to make the Leia Cosplay – but since next month I get tattooed and have an appointment at my hairdresser, I am really not sure about the money for fabric.
