the ruins of herculaneum and vesuvius

Herculaneum Vesuvius Vulcan archaeology travel italy
Visiting Herculaneum and Vesuvius were the two things I really, really wanted to while being in Campagnia. I have been to Pompeii years ago and I have some weird memories of it that are somewhat intertwined with my memories of the Prater in Vienna – don’t ask, I really do not know why. Anyway, my mum and I went to “the other city”, the less tourist-y one. It was very fascinating to see, especially wince a lot of the wall colour and ornaments are still intact. Of course, it is also very sad/emotional to see a place that was inhabitated once, but hit by such a catasthrope – even though after reading a lot on the subject, I really wonder why people did not leave before the vulvan hit, because there were some obvious signs things would go downhill (and there had been extreme earthquakes before that cause destruction). Therefore I can’t help but wonder – even it such an event was unexpected, some sort of strike of nature was to be expected. Of course, I was not there, so I cannot say what I would have done and it’s always easy to wonder/judge afterwards.

Anyway, apparently most people in Herculaneum managed to escape, nevertheless they had to leave everything behind, lost friends and family members. And still Vesuvius nowadays looks calm and beautiful (some activity is expected in the next years/decades/centuries), I find it fascinating how much this can deceive you. As a Latin student for six years and then an additional seminar for two more) I learnt quite a bit about the time Pompeii and Herculaneum were still inhabitated and how the destruction came to be. However reading some additional books did help of course. It’s also interesting, since the discovery of the cities and the uncovering was also heavily encouraged by 18th/19th century female royality (another favourite subject of mine). The wifes often were more interested than there husbands. One of them was Caroline Murat and I think Maria Karolina (or another daughter of Maria Theresia of Austria who basically said the digs/founds were the only thing keeping her alive).

If you would like to see my take on historically inacurate take on a historic (some weird mixture of 1850s-1950s) female archaeologist, you can find that here. Of course that also means a few more pictures of Herculaneum and Vusuvius.

By the time this day way over, mum and I were really done, I could not recall the code for my phone andymore and her battery was almost dead and we still had to find out how to get home! It was a mess, but even the unfriendly people and the angst could not overshine the wonderful day and the incredibly friendly people that helped us/were friendly (the driver of the shuttle up mount vesuvius, his collagues later, the people at the restaurant, the people working at at digs)…

temples and icecream in Paestum ♥

Paestum Travel Beige Outfit Italy Poseidonia
Today I wanted to share some photos from Paestum. In case you follow me on Instagram you already saw some of them on Instagram. I love archaeology and Greek mythology, so this was a wonderful place to be at. I loved all the beautiful beige stones that tell stories that happened long ago. Paestum was founded by the Greek, named Poseidonia back then (about 600 BC). Due to the fertile soil, they could plant a lot of stuff and got wealthy enough to built those gigantic temples. As with so many place this one got lost and was found again around the same time as Pompeii and Herculaneum (18th century). If you get the chance you should visit the temples of Hera, Poseidon and Athena as well as the museum, they have some fascinating pieces there.

The Heraion is a bit further away, mum and I took the bikes to get there. It’s only a couple of stones/remains, but apparently it was sort of a temple once, too. However the museum they had closed as well which I think is rather sad.

what I got in paestum, napoli and herculaneum

Currently I am working my way through the photos I took in the south of Italy at the end of August/beginning of September. And the easiest to filter though and edit are the things I found and bought. I did not get a lot, but rather collected a couple of nature things/lost items. Also somewhere (probably in the car) there could be a beautiful pine cone. But I yet have to find it again.

Paestum Haul Shopping Napoli Herculaneum Book Jewellery Cameo Gold
In Paestum and at Herculaneum I found these old booklets about historic Italian sites. There is an entire series, but of course they only keep the ones relevant to the particular site at the museum shops. These ones are from the 70s and 80s.

At a music store in Naples (musicanteshop) I found a couple of great postcards and I picked up Pulp Fiction and Star Wars for myself. I just love the designs and that they look like they were produced right after the movies came out.

My mum had to get something for a friend’s kid and Coconudina was the shop for that. However they had belts on sale for about 2 Euros and since they are for kids, I can wear them around the waist. Since I try to incoorporate more belts in my wardrobe, a black one was a must.

One of my favourite type of jewellery are cameos, especially as brooches, but also as necklaces and this one bysimon one is just such a beauty! It was a gift by my mum an I treasure it a lot.

I also got this piece, a gold bracelet in a somewhat Roman/Etruscan style and I think they truly captured the Antique feeling.

Paestum Haul Shopping Napoli Herculaneum Book Jewellery Cameo Gold Lost things Nature
Lastly, a couple of things people lost, and things I collected – shells, amber, mini pine cones, a piece from Mount Vesuvio, a moth, keys (I guess bike lock), a rose on a pin, a ad and a Albert Einstein e=mc² bracelet. I do not know the stories behind those, but I really like thinking they have great ones.

What do you like to collect, do you keep keepsakes from nature?

One of my favourite things to do is create character outfits, or creating characters for certain outfits. Not only as a sort of closet cosplay, but also as a new character I invent. And this for sure is my most elaborate. I tried to pay attention to every little detail and collected a bunch of accessoires (I was very lucky in that way, with things I had at home and found at flea markets). Actually I was also looking for a blouse but I could not find a matching one for the life of me. So I made one – it is far from perfect, because I messed up some construction work, but I was lucky to find this fabric while looking for the skirt fabric.

I knew I would take this to Herculaneum (and Vesuvius), because to me this is a 19th/20th century inspired female archaeologist looking for adventure and science. It’s well known how difficult it was for women at that time to actually follow scientific interest and I find it so inspiring to hear about the ones that managed to gather knowlegde and maybe even got the chance to visit the digs. Since I follow a couple of vintage dressing archaeologists on Instagram I always connect those two things. After all, if you’re interested in history and art of the past, why not in clothing, too?

It was so wonderful to wear this outfit in such a matching scenery, I was actually called Miss Indiana Jones and compared to Evelyn from The Mummy, and I really dig those comparsions. You are aware, that I love drawing inspiration from fictional characters like Charlotte Charles and Adèle Blanc-Sec, but creating characters of my own makes me feel even better. It is like the outfits tell a story, like this person in this outfit is part of a novel while still being a part of me, too. I think art and history is fascinating – and I am so in love with beige/muted tones at the moment. The are warm, calm and studious in a way that makes me very comfortable.

the one time I didn’t wear a dress

Merry go round Outfit

Merry go round Outfit

Merry go round Outfit

If you follow this blog had a tiny look at this blog you’ve probably realised, I exclusively wear dresses (or skirt). Not matter the weather. I just prefer them and the way I look in them. Also I never – successfully – sewed pants/trousers.
Anyway, that very day, when my mum and I decided to go to Jesolo (which is near the campside and a good place for shopping), I decided to go for shorts. We arrived and almost the first thing we saw was this beautiful merry-go-round. WITH A PUMPKIN CARRIAGE. I mean, that’s the best thing about Disney’s Cinderella. You know, I like Disney and princesses (though I mostly prefer non-princess-characters like Alice) and the combination of both, even though they do have flaws. A lot of them, the perfection, the hetronormatitity, the prince as center of attention. Emma wrote an amazing post about it. Still, I like most of the Disney heroines/princesses, there are amazing Snow White adaptions, especially the one with Lily Collins and Julia Roberts (okay, that’s not Disney anymore, btw the ONCE fairy tales are amazing, too) and of the classic princesses she’s my favourite. But, besides her – of course I like the others a bit, too, but there are a lot of things I don’t like – I only really like Merida (and her movie Brave, of course). It’s pixar, so it’s kind of different anyway. But Merida doesn’t want marriage. She doesn’t want the fate she’s supposed to have and so she’s fights, is brave. Maybe, it’s good that I didn’t wear a dress that would have matched the scenery, but shorts. I don’t want to be a Disney princess anyway.

Aber Merida will keine Hochzeit.

…and food. Anyway, I love food prints. I told you about my love of fruit prints before. Which is something to eat just as well, but I think “real food” (aka sweets) is even better. I mean it’s wearing what you love on a dress. And it’s the perfect excuse to eat sweets. Isn’t it? When there’s a print of something I love – birds, food, umbrellas (okay, that one doesn’t really match) – I want this fabric. And food is way up on that list.

Yeah, not on schedule

Fruit Outfit

Fruit Outfit

Fruit Outfit

Gosh, I’m so bad at keeping up with schedules. I have an on/off relationship with them, basically. When I make them, I love them and keep up with them for like a week, or three. Then I start getting out of schedule – want to do things on other days. Blogwise that means either posting more often or spontanous. Or I forget something/don’t find the time. I like preparing post, I really do (this one is too), but somehow I want them out faster, within about two weeks, not two months later.
So, here we go not following schedules.

Impressions of Venice

Venice

I’ve been to Venice quite often before and I always kind of liked it. Even though, I’m not that fond of Italy – probably because I’ve been there so often -, Venice is a beautiful city. The shabby side and the pretty side. It’s colourful and full of beautiful houses and balconies. Here is an Outfit I wore in Venice and now enjoy the pictures.

Venice Outfit

I really love looking all elegant and graceful, you know, like Grace Kelly or Snow White. It’s very different from my character, actually. When you come to think about it, it’s quite the opposite. I’m clumpsy and akward, I have the strangest accidents, too. When I sat on the airport in Hamburg I felt like buying deodorant. At Rituals I found a set with a few things, and bought it. So, I used – wanted to use – the deo. But nothing happened, when I sprayed, so I did it again. Nothing. I had a look at the deo. Between my arm and my side everything was somehow cold and wet. Turns out I used shower foam. It was like a foam party. Without people. Or a party. Actually just foam between my cardigan and shirt. Well, I had to use about three tissues to get all the foam away. It was funny, though, even back then. I don’t mind not being elegant or graceful, I like looking that way, though.

Haul: Venice, Hamburg and Mail Day #3

So, since there’s a lot of stuff I’m gonna show you today, I’ll only write where I got it and very briefly why I got it, if you’ve got further questions, just ask me. So, here we go, that’s what I bought within the last couple weeks…

Venice (Cavallino and Jesolo)
Flowers
I’m a sucker for hairflowers and I found these at the campsite. Since they were like 3 € each, I bought the colours I liked most. I found the hairtie in a cute boutique in Jesolo and even though I’ll have short hair for (the rest of my life) I don’t know how long, I feel in love with it instantly.

Gloves
I wanted white gloves for quite some time and then I found these in Venice (I’ll add the shop name when I remember it). They aren’t white, but so beautiful…

Leone
Leone Pastilles are kind of a must when you’re in Venice. And my Instagram friend @arianette_b told me about the metal boxes and since I collect these…

Pin, Perfume
I found this cute pin in a little jewellery shop near San Marco (but there aren’t that many tourists) and I think masks are great for brooches. The perfume sample is of Mandarin Carnival by The Merchant of Venice which my mum and I bought and it smells amazing.

OVS Cardigan
At OVS I found this adorable heart cardigan – I never liked this colour before, but I think it looks darling this way.

Replay Shoes
I also bought shoes (there are more pairs to come) at a store in Jesolo, I found these Replay shoes (without leather – yeah) and decided to buy them. I didn’t wear them yet, though…

Kiko
At Kiko I bought Eyeliner, my favourite sunscreen cream for the face and my favourite lip pencil. And – since I like colourful eye makeup atm – green eyeshadow.

Hamburg
Collectif
I went to Fräulein Stadtfein in Hamburg – which is an adorable store btw – with my mum (she was in Hamburg, too, for two days, I stayed for two weeks) and she gifted me this cute Collectif Jean Bolero.

claire's
I love claire’s, they have great, creative earings (like the cherries which I just had to get) and then I found this cute flower crown (and the flower, too) and since I was thinking about doing one myself, I just bought this.

Graceland Shoes
It was unexpectably difficult finding new black balet flats (in German size 35-36, which is a size 5-6 in America, I believe) after I ruined my old ones, but eventually I found those at Deichmann – and pointy shoes are just my thing.

Besame Lipstick
Besamé Website
I was swooning over Besame Cosmetics for months and finally I got the lipstick in the colour Red (look up their site, they are amazing) at Fräulein Stadtfein.

dm, Rossmann
The brushes (cheeks, lips, crease) were less than 1 € each at Rossmann and they simply looked adorable. The sharpener was needed, I thought the concealer pen great for around the lips (and it is) and the lipstick is from the new dm brand Trend it up, so I had to try it.

Banned Blouse
Blouse via amazon
Before I bought this Banned Blouse at S.P.O.C fashion (a great Rockabilly store in St. Pauli) I already saw it on amazon, but wasn’t sure whether to buy it or not. It fitted great and I bought it.

Necklace
At Boom Chica Boom I found this necklace (I don’t know what they are called, but I love this style, please tell me if you know) and I liked the colour.

Vintage Brooch
I got this Vintage cameo for 4 € (!) at a flea market and just…just look at the details…the little hair bow, flowers…

Butterfly Twists Shoes
Butterfly Twists Website (mine are the Cleo in Berry/Tan, but I can’t find them unfortunately)
My mum said, I had to get these shoes at the airport (after she got one when she went back to Munich) due to their comfiness and so I choose the leo print with red.

Mail Day #3
Brooches Boxes

Brooches

I ordered at Deer Arrow (again…) and at Hungry Designs and aren’t these brooches the most? The poisonous apple and the mirror (saying Fairest of them all) are by Deer Arrow and the Pirate Girl is from Hungry Designs on etsy. Both shops are wonderful and very friendly (plus they obviously have great designs).

Brause
I just had to show this sherbets may mum gave me. Aren’t they cute? That’s it for today. What would you’ve bought? Or what did you buy recently?

Was hättet ihr gekauft? Oder was habt ihr zuletzt gekauft?
