As you might already know my best friend
like to visit are obsessed with Ludwig II., so we have to visit all of his castles. Here and here are posts of us visting other castles he built and at the end of July we also managed to visit Herrenchiemsee, now we only need to go to Linderhof.
As always we got there by train, then we decided to walk towards the landing pier – which took only about 10-15 minutes, but felt like forever because it was crazyily hot. But on the other hand we got to see the fairy tale garden. Taking the ship to get to the castle was really nice – also that always reminds me of Venice. Then again – recently EVERYTHING does remind me of Venice. As it started to drizzel we took the carriage (which was much ess fancy than it sounds) to the castle. Well, we where dressed accordingly – after all we went to visit a castle of Ludwig II., the fairytale king. Everyone else was dressed in hiking outfits (which was smarter, I guess – but come on, if you have to choose between fancy and smart, always go for fancy).
The castle itself is very much to my liking inside and out – of course you can’t take pictures inside, but there are a few up here. Like, really, I want to live there even though only a couple of rooms are actually finished. I totally get why Ludwig wanted all those castles – did you know that he decided to sleep during the day and be awake at night in 1875? Yes, I might fancy that idea as well. Of course, I’m aware of his personal troubles, but stil, he’s just such an interesting personality it would have been great to meet him. And if you visit Herrenchiemsee you have to visit the museum inside the castle as well. Some of the things displayed there are so funny. Eventually we enjoyed the afternoon on the Fraueninsel which was lovely since the sun came out again.
Anyway, I think those castles Ludwig built are the most beautiful thing about Bavaria, they are really worth a visit and the history of him and his family (to which Sissi/Sisi/Elisabeth belongs as well) is really interesting. Of course, I’m interested in history anyway, but his family is so interesting especially when you think of their clothing and castles as well.
